Last weekend in Basel Switzerland, etnies’ rider and proud Austrian, Steve Forstner was crowned 2005’s European Champion in Street at the European Skateboard Championships. The 23-year-old dominated the Street Finals with his fluent frontside 5-0s down the big hubba and footplants to fakie on the wallride, just to name a few.

Adding to the etnies winner’s circle, last year’s champion and Swiss local, Oli Buergin, took second in Miniramp, while Germany’s Juergen Horrwarth nabbed a strong third in both Miniramp and Vert. Evelien Bouillart, who won the first Girl’s Jam in Munich earlier this year, was injured during the practice runs, but still managed to beat out 14 other girls and land sixth place in the Girl’s Jam.

Sheckler Gets Second!

by: Brink | Monday, August 22, 2005

sheck dew tour
Proper back smith.

Congrats to Ryan Sheckler for placing second in Portland at the third stop of the Dew Action Sports Tour. Ryan, as usual, had some flawless runs and only came in less than a point under Greg Lutzka, who took first. Two more stops to go, the next is September 9 in San Jose, California. I think Ryan will take it...

Rune and Ronnie were in Portland as well. Ronnie was seen switch hardflipping the pyramid with ease. He got 9th. Rune placed 6th in vert with his usualy array of lip trick madness, including 270 to back smiths...not bad for a guy who has been all over the world for the last few weeks and is still coming off damaged ribs...

Check the TV Schedule to see the when the Dew Tour is playing near you.

Post-X Games Team Update!

Torn up!

You’ve probably already read/heard the results from the weekend's X Games here on the etnies.com, but just in case, here is a quick recap:

Last Thursday, Ryan Sheckler and Bastien Salabanzi skated in the Street contest at the X Games in Los Angeles. Ryan ended up placing 4th…probably could’ve done better had he not broke himself trying to back smith the rail during the second jam session. He came back and landed a few bangers but wasn't feeling quite 100%. Either way, congrats Ryan for kicking ass!

bastien bsts
This is a kickflip back tail bigspin out.

Bastien also was in the contest, but he showed up a little late so never really got into the groove. Ewan Bowman, Flip’s Team Manager, was driving Bastien to the X Games, doing about 90mph. They ended up getting pulled over, and Ewan explained that they were running late for the X Games and he had a couple skaters in the car who were in the contest. The cop didn’t believe them, but when they showed their credentials, he believed them and let them go…apparently the cop said “Oh okay, you are in the X Games…well I’ll let you go then, but don’t go faster than 75mph.” It’s nice to know there are a few good cops out there. Bastien ended up getting 9th.

rune signing
As busy as he is, Rune always makes time to sign...

Rune Glifberg had a busy X Games. He entered the Vert contest, the Vert Best Trick contest, and the Big Air contest! The thing that sucked was that he bruised his ribs/chest a week prior finishing up on the Boom Boom Huck Jam Tour…he came up short on the Huck Jam ramp pitched straight to flat—not a good thing. He was barely able to practice at the X Games, but still entered Vert (placing 9th), Vert Best trick (placing 5th), and Big Air (he didn’t qualify for the finals, but still skated) all while in pretty decent pain. Hell yeah Rune! No pain, no gain!

After the contest and the media frenzy that always surrounds Ryan Sheckler, he headed back home to chill for a bit and get ready for back-to-back contest weekends. Next weekend (Aug. 19–21) he will be in Portland for the third stop on the Dew Action Sports Tour and the weekend after that (Aug. 26–28) up in Vancouver, Canada for the Slam City Jam contest. From now until then, he’ll be home skating and getting ready for his upcoming trips.

rune and evelien breakfast
Rune and etnies Girl rider Evelien ragin at breakfast. She got silver in Girl's Street.

Two days after the X Games, Rune headed back to Denmark to spend some much needed time with his family. He hadn’t seen them since early July, and that was a short visit anyway. Rune has had a hectic summer so far. Enjoy your down time Rune! Next week, he’s right back at it though as he is flying from Copenhagen to Portland for the Dew Tour.

Bastien
and Arto Saari are currently deep in the heart of Texas, on Thrasher’s King of the Road tour. You’ve probably seen a couple posts here on the site about it…especially the one about 40-year old hags with rose tattoos. The tour started last Friday, and ends in New York in 10 days or so. We’ll have more updates as we hear them.

creager golf
Happy Golfing!

Ronnie Creager got back from Arizona this weekend. He took a short trip out there to shoot photos and get some footage for various ads, etc. (it’s hot out there you maniac!). He’s now back in Southern California doing the same thing—skating everyday. As you may have guessed, he is also finding a little time to play some golf—usually with Sheckler. Next week, Ronnie (like Ryan) is headed to Portland for the Dew Series event, and the following week he’ll also be headed to Vancouver for Slam City Jam.

Stefan Janoski,
along with Habitat and etnies teammate Silas Baxter-Neal, left last Thursday with the Habitat crew on King of the Road. They are taking the northern route to the East Coast (as opposed to Flip who are taking the southern route). No updates yet on how things are going for their crew, but we’ll get some soon and update you.

That’s it. Now turn your computer off and go skate!

Brian Patch's Destroyed Foot!

by: Brink | Tuesday, August 9, 2005

patchs foot
Harsh!

Longtime friend of the etnies family, Brian Patch went a few rounds with the Mega Ramp during practice at X Games last week, however, when skating a structure that massive, there isn't much room for error.

Brian bailed out of an air on the quarterpipe onto the deck, missing the padded landing area...from about 15-plus feet up, this isn't fun. He pretty much ended up shattering his foot, made a trip to the hospital, had some plates put in it and got to roll around the X Games in a wheelchair, which basically gets you the best seats in the house.

Get well soon, Brian. We want to see you skating that ramp again next year.

The FLIP Team Desperately Needs Your Help!

by: Brink | Monday, August 8, 2005

bastien

Arto Saari, Bastien Salabanzi and rest of the Flip team are currently on the Thrasher King of the Road tour.

The team has a mission to accomplish and need your help for the Burt Reynolds Challenge. Here's a message from Arto:

We are looking for chicks who are over 40, preferably with a "rose" tattoo, who are down to makeout with members of the Flip team in the Dallas area between Wednesday and Friday of this week. There is a possible shop at Fast Forward skateshop where we can also be found.

We will be in a white van with a bunch of King of the Road stickers on it. If you are down for the cause and you see this van, honk if you want to make out.

Elissa and Evelien Dominate the Podium at X 11!

Lauren blasts over the gap.

One thing's for sure, etnies knows skateboarding. That's why we have some of the best riders in the world on our team. And the team made etnies proud last weekend at the Women's Skateboard Street event at X Games 11.

Last year's bronze medalist, Lauren Perkins, had her own cheering section in the stands, who spent much of their time waving Volcom's custom made "Lauren" signs as she blasted ollies over the launch gap, feebled and front boardslid the flat bar, 50-50 grinded the hubba and boardslid the big rail during the rail/hubba jam session.

Lauren was just shy of making the podium with Evelien and Elissa but fourth is nothing to be ashamed of when you're competing against the best in the world.

evelien signs
Evelien signs for a fan.

Evelien Bouilliart has been competing for only a year. Although admittedly nervous, it didn't stop her from destroying the handrail jam session with frontside and backside 50-50's, feebles, frontside 5-0s, lipslides and smith grinds.

Congrats, Evelien, on winning the silver medal at your first X Games, and for enduring a lengthy autograph signing session for the fans!

elissa kickflip
Elissa's broken-footed kickflip.

With her birthday only a few days away, Elissa Steamer couldn't ask for a gift better than an X Games gold medal. The most consistent skater and one of the few who landed nearly all her tricks, Elissa told EXPN "I'm kind of surprised that I won, these girls are awesome. I'm happy that I did as well as I did."

Elissa didn't hold back as she landed trick after trick after trick in her runs and the jam sessions: ollies over the double set into the bank, stylish shifties and kickflips over the the gap and down the stairs, front and backside noseslides on the ledges, krooked grinds on the flatbar and 50-50s down the hubba, just to name a few.

evelien 5-0
Evelien landed this 5-0 with ease.

Midway through the rail jam, Elissa attempted a kickfip down the stairs but had to bail in order to avoid a collision with Vanessa Torres. After getting up, sticking the kickflip and then skating the launch/gap jam, Elissa, and the paramedics, realized she'd been skating on a broken foot for the second half of the rail jam and the entire launch jam session.

This is Elissa's second consecutive X Games gold medal and we don't doubt she will nab a third next year. Hearty congrats to Elissa, Evelien and Lauren for skating hard and making etnies proud!

Rune about to drop in for his Vert run.

Rune Glifberg has been busy all weekend. First skating in the Vert contest at X Games 11. Despite dealing with some bruised ribs from the Boom Boom Huck Jam tour and not feeling his best, he had some clean runs and landed a sick switch backside kickflip (no grab) and placed ninth.

They got Rune's back!

Rune skated well during Best Trick and landed backside nosegrinds on the bench, kickflip back lips, a ridiculous disaster on the six-foot vert extention, and, if that wasn't enough, he started trying frontside heelflip to disaster on the same extention. Even thought he didn't land it, just seeing him get into it a few times was insane enough--believe me.

So congrats to Rune on repping etnies to the fullest, being one of the only riders to land more than one trick during Vert Best Trick and for just ripping all weekend in general.

Proper switch flip from Ryan

Just so y'all are in the know, Ryan Sheckler placed fourth in X Games Skateboard Street earlier today.

Coming out of his first two runs, Ryan was in the lead and the only skater with a flawless run for that portion of the contest. Shortly after, in the handrail jam session, Ryan took a nasty slam on a back smith that left him being carried off the course by paramedics.

ryan and the paramedics
Paramedics checkin' the damage

After a few moments of limping and catching his breath, somehow Sheck shook it off and got back in the jam, landing the back smith that took him out originally and rifling off tricks down the rail like no one's business.

In the final jam session of the day (launch ramp to gap of bushes) Sheckler busted full cabs, switch flips and proper frontside flips with ease.

Congrats, Ryan, not only for being a trooper but for placing high and making etnies proud!
Stay tuned for up-to-the-minute coverage of the etnies team at X Games 11.

Pre-X Games Team Update!

by: Brink | Monday, August 1, 2005

ronnie and ryan
Golf is all the rage among pros these days
sheckler club
Breaking shit is fun

The X-Games is upon us once again, and that is the focus of this edition of the team updates…

Yup, X-Games 11 is this week in Los Angeles, starting on Thursday, and ending on Sunday. Bastien Salabanzi and Ryan Sheckler will both be skating in the Street contest on Thursday, the 4th and practicing each day leading up to it. Rune Glifberg will be skating in the Vert contest on Friday evening (the 5th), the Vert Best Trick contest on Saturday (the 6th), and the X-Games finale event, Big Air on Sunday (the 7th). It’s gonna be a hectic one, so get ready if you plan on attending.

In other team news, Ronnie Creager has been skating in the Southern California area everyday, and when he isn’t skating he’s been out golfing (sometimes with Sheckler, check the photos). His schedule is a bit slow at the moment (no big trips planned for a couple weeks) so he’s on a steady diet of street skating.

golfing creager
Even better form!

Sheckler just got back from Missouri this weekend, where he attended the SOKA event in St. Charles. Other than that, he’s just been skating and getting ready for the X-Games (and golfing every so often).

Bastien Salabanzi gets back from Europe on Tuesday, August 2, and will be heading straight to the X-Games for practice to get ready for Thursday’s finals. On Friday, he leaves with the Flip team (which will include etnies teammate Arto Saari) on Thrasher Magazine’s King of the Road trip which starts Friday and goes for about two weeks.

Arto gets back from Europe on Tuesday as well, just in time for the aforementioned King of the Road trip. He’s been out in Barcelona skating and enjoying a bit of down time after the summer madness that he was involved in…three months straight of demos, contests, autograph signings, and street skating.

Rune Glifberg just finished up the Tony Hawk Boom Boom Huck Jam tour over the weekend, just in time for the X-Games. Rune has been practicing on the Mega Ramp on the tour to get ready for the Big Air X-Games event on Sunday, August 7. Good luck Rune! After the X-Games, Rune’s headed back to Copenhagen, Denmark for 10 days or so to relax and spend some time with his family…it has been a hectic summer for him as well.

golf
Good form!

Stefan Janoski has been skating at home in Sacramento lately, and enjoying that time at home ‘cuz he leaves on King of the Road Friday as well with the Habitat crew, which will also include etnies flow rider Silas Baxter-Neal.

Lots going on, so keep checking back for team updates, contest results, and what-have-you...See you at X Games!
