June 3-5, 2005
etnies European Open
Krakow Poland
Street competition only

During the last eight years the etnies European Open has become one of the leading skateboard events in Europe. The ninth edition of the etnies European Open kicked off in Munich a few weeks ago, and the second competition takes place in Krakow, long heralded as "The New Prague," is now well established as a major tourist destination.

At the height of summer, Poland’s fourth largest city throngs with tour groups, all manner of tourist tack and countless pavement cafés that seem to occupy every cobble of the main square. For the etnies European Open the University contributes their old style basketball hall and IOU provides a new streetcourse. Arto Saari, Bastien Salabanzi and Ali Boulala are expected in Poland!

Street prelims are held on Friday, qualifiers are on the scheduled on Saturday and Sunday is Final’s day. Best Trick is also on Sunday. The entry fee is 30 Euros. And everyone will be battling it out for 10 000 Euros in prize money!

Remember the Crazy Photo Contest Last Month?

by: Brink | Thursday, May 26, 2005

dummies
The fact that someone has access to crash test dummies and then put etnies on them is fascinating to me.
How random...not cows or horses mating...but friggin llamas? Brilliant!

Three of these photos are gonna earn some people free etnies!...We have narrowed it down from hundreds of entries and these are the cream of the crop. I might just be nice and throw in some honorable mentions once the winners are annouced, but for now, see for yourself what we have to work with here. If you think you could have done better than this, then it is your own damn fault for not entering. Remember folks, the entires had to have a visable, legible pair of etnies in them. We had some funny entries that didn't meet that requirement and, as a result, were purged. Pay attention next time fools!

Just flat-out ridiculous.
sad dog
Pet cooperation is impressive.
Is this people reaching for etnies shoes that are being tossed to them or an etnies shoe invasion from outer space?
This is so janky that it rules. Look at the rail steez that dog has!
How unaffected does that Ghandi guy look? Simply amazing!
far side
A wonderful play on a classic comic strip.
jock strap
I am still baffled as to who walks down the street with a jock strap on? Is this frequent behavior?
peeing
AAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAH! God bless potty humor.
river shoe
This is the "artistic" entry. Let's look at it and think deep thoughts.

What's Up With Sheckler?

by: Brink | Monday, May 23, 2005

Sheck rain

Lots going on in the wild world of Ryan Sheckler lately...First off, it seems like Ryan has some obsessed stalker on his trail.

From ryansheckler.com:

There is a very strange girl out there trying to be me. She is bidding on ebay for items and telling the sellers that she is Ryan Sheckler. Her email address is sk8rgirlkb@aol.com but her alias is me Ryan Sheckler. Anyway, I just thought you all should know to be careful of people like this.

I actually think it may be an adult man trying to be a girl to solicit young kids. Either way it’s a weird situation and you can't be too careful.

Secondly, check Ryan and a photo of his new pimped ride.

More on Ryan once he and the team return from their Euro excursion.

Go Skateboarding Day is a Month Away

From IASC:

Go Skateboarding Day, June 21

For one day, skateboarders will take over the world! Imagine 20 million-plus skateboarders riding at the same time.

If skateboarders have their way, that will be the scene on the first day of summer—Go Skateboarding Day. It’s a day for skateboarders to skate above all else. It’s also an opportunity for those who’ve never been on a skateboard to grab a friend and join in.

The inaugural Go Skateboarding Day this past June caught on quicker than anyone imagined. Skateboarders held events throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia and Japan. Some of those events included backyard jams, skatepark sessions and impromptu street missions.

JAPAN!

Last year was just the beginning of the grind heard around the world. This year, Go Skateboarding Day is going to be bigger, so here are some excuses to tell your boss or teacher: “I can’t make it on Tuesday, June 21 because…”

My house is on fire
I’m going to the dentist
The dog ate my slippers
I have a doctor’s appointment
I’m going to get my nails done
My sick grandmother needs me by her side
I have a tornado to attend
My cubicle is being remodeled
Global warming beckons my name
My dog died
I have to go vote for something

Here’s the best: I’m going skateboarding. Deal with it!

Regional Go Skateboarding Day events will be posted at local skate shops.

etnies Proudly Welcomes Ronnie Creager to the Team!

by: Brink | Wednesday, May 18, 2005

ronnie

You might have heard some rumors, or even seen him rocking etnies as of late in What If?, at Tampa Pro, or some of the demos the team has been doing, but Ronnie Creager is officially the newest etnies pro!

Ronnie's style is a rare combination of effortless, precise and flawless tech--but never neglecting versatility and all types of terrain. He is one of the few talented and blessed individuals to have pretty much mastered the art of riding a skateboard, sometimes making it all just look like a big joke.

Ronnie makes skateboarding fun and he's the perfect new addition to the roster. Expect to see more of Ronnie on etnies.com very soon. We'll be sure to keep you posted.

The crew, along with etnies AM Eric Fletcher, and Europe riders Conhuir Lynn, Javier Mendizabel, Steve Forstner, Willow, and Julian Furones will be doing a very large demo, a very large autograph signing, and some media/press interviews as well. Don't miss out!

etnies Team is Getting Euro!

by: Brink | Wednesday, May 11, 2005

poster

Arto Saari, Ryan Sheckler, and Bastien Salabanzi are embarking on a journey to Europe starting this weekend. At the end of the week, they will all be headed out to Paris, France for the V7 Teenage Tour Finals, which will take place Sunday, May 15 at the Cosa Nostra Skatepark in Chelles, France. The crew, along with etnies AM Eric Fletcher, and Europe riders Conhuir Lynn, Javier Mendizabel, Steve Forstner, Willow, and Julian Furones will be doing a very large demo, a very large autograph signing, and some media/press interviews as well.

Once that's done, Bastien will be staying in Paris to visit with his family before the hectic summer schedule, but Arto, Ryan, Fletcher, Conhuir, and Steve will be headed out to Helsinki and Seinajoki (Arto’s hometown) Finland. In Helsinki, the crew will be participating in a couple jam sessions, complete with live music, BBQ, and they’ll also be signing autographs (Tuesday, the 17th and Thursday, the 19th of May). They’ll also be doing a bunch of skating, hitting up the now-not-frozen skate spots of Finland.

Next Friday, May 20th, everyone will head to Seinajoki for a weekend of festivities at the newly built skatepark in the city. etnies sponsors the park, so we figured it would be good to show up and show some support to the skaters that skate the park on a daily basis. Friday night will be a private session with the guys, but Saturday will be the big event, a mini-ramp jam, sessions with the locals, autograph signings, promo giveaways, live music and DJ’s, a BBQ, an art gallery exhibition, etc. Good fun for sure. The trip then concludes on a secret recon mission to the woods. You’ll hear about it when everyone returns (Rune Glifberg is flying out for this mission, so that should give you a hint or two). The trip ends on the 26th, but stay tuned for updates.

Aside from this trip, here is what everyone has been up to and what they’ll be up to after the trip…

arto

Arto Saari just concluded a tour with Quiksilver up in Canada. An 11-day mission of demos and autograph signings went down in Montreal and Toronto. After this next trip, Arto will be staying in Finland a while, before heading to Poland for the upcoming etnies European Open, scheduled for June 4– 6.

Stefan Janoski was also on that Canadian mission, and will be on another mission starting this weekend…he is headed through the Northwest with Habitat on a photo and filming mission. He’ll have a somewhat mellow start to June before embarking on yet more missions.

bastien tampa

Bastien Salabanzi has been in Paris visiting his family and awaiting the arrival of his etnies teammates (as described above). He needed some down time to relax and visit his family before things really start getting hectic in June and July. After this weekend, Bastien will be chillin’ with his family before heading out to Poland for that same etnies contest Arto is going to. Stay tuned for updates on this in early June.

Sheckler has been busy with school lately, and preparing for this mission to Europe. He has also been getting started on a few inteview projects for a couple skate mags, while shooting photos for the needs of his various sponsors. After Ryan returns from Europe, he’ll be chillin’ at home before things get hectic for him in June and July.

Rune Glifberg has been going to the skatepark at the Block in Orange lately preparing for the Combi Bowl contest going down this Saturday evening. Vans is putting this contest on, and it is $25,000 winner take all. Hopefully Vans will be paying our boy Rune $25,000! Good luck Rune! The following day (Sunday, the 15th) Rune heads out to Budapest to meet up with Flip owner Jeremy Fox for the Gumball Rally. The Gumball Rally is a car race that begins in London and ends in Monaco. Not sure what the prize is, but it sounds like fun even if you end up in last place. Rune will be flying from Monaco to Finland for that recon mission mentioned above.

That wraps up another edition of “team updates.” Another update will come in early June once this trip has come to an end. Keep shreddin’ fellow shredders, and have fun!

Everyone loves a back smith

This past weekend, the first stop of the etnies European Open in Munich, Germany proved to be the leading street skating event in Europe with over 100 professional skateboarders from all over the country competing.

European etnies rider, Tobias Albert, from Germany, took fourth overall, while also winning third place in Best Trick. etnies Austrian rider Steve Forstner nabbed first in Best Trick with a backside noseblunt on the wall!

Salad? Dressen? Suski? There's a few ways to name this grind.

Sixteen-year-old Lem Villemin from Germany, took first place overall with smoother-than-usual 5-0 grinds and flippage all over the course. Second place went to Germany’s Kilian Heuberger, while Henning Braaten from Oslo, Norway took third.

The Push etnies Girl Jam was an undeniable success and 15-year old etnies Girl Evelien Bouillard from Belgium and feeble grinded, heelflipped and 50/50’d her way into a well-deserved first place. The Girl’s Jam will continue to be a strong and exciting part of the etnies European Open this year, just you wait and see…

The girl on the left is a cutie! Anyone have her number?

Munich’s pre-elimination was, for the first time, limited to 80 starters. A new system for the semifinals was developed: instead of two 45-second runs, riders did an introductory run and a three-minute jam session. By the time it came down to the 12 finalists on Sunday, the new format proved itself to deliver a higher level of skateboarding, while eliminating some of the pressures of competition.

Congratulations to all the etnies riders who came away the first of hopefully many European Open winners for 2005! See you all on June 3-5 in Krakow, Poland for the next etnies Open!
