The world is getting to the point where skateboarding, moto-x, BMX, surfing and snowboarding are actually safer and more controlled than some of the riff raff that people are trying.

The Countdown To "Go Skateboarding Day"
by: Brink | Thursday, April 21, 2005
From IASC:
Go Skateboarding Day, June 21
3/30/05 (Orange County, Calif) For one day, skateboarders will take over the world! Imagine 20 million-plus skateboarders riding at the same time.
If skateboarders have their way, that will be the scene on the first day of summer—Go Skateboarding Day. It’s a day for skateboarders to skate above all else. It’s also an opportunity for those who’ve never been on a skateboard to grab a friend and join in.
The inaugural Go Skateboarding Day this past June caught on quicker than anyone imagined. Skateboarders held events throughout the Americas, Europe, Australia and Japan. Some of those events included backyard jams, skatepark sessions and impromptu street missions.
Last year was just the beginning of the grind heard around the world. This year, Go Skateboarding Day is going to be bigger, so here are some excuses to tell your boss or teacher: “I can’t make it on Tuesday, June 21 because…”
My house is on fire
I’m going to the dentist
The dog ate my slippers
I have a doctor’s appointment
I’m going to get my nails done
My sick grandmother needs me by her side
I have a tornado to attend
My cubicle is being remodeled
Global warming beckons my name
My dog died
I have to go vote for something
Here’s the best: I’m going skateboarding. Deal with it!
Regional Go Skateboarding Day events will be posted at local skate shops.
A Doozy of a Team Update!
by: Brink | Tuesday, April 19, 2005

- Sign, sign, sign
It has been a while since the last major team update. This one will be quite lengthy, lots to report from the month of March and so far in April.

- Arto killing time
In early March (before Tampa Pro), Arto Saari, Bastien Salabanzi, Stefan Janoski, and Conhuir Lynn all headed out to Florida to do some skating in the skateboarding mecca that is Miami. It was a week long trip leading up to Tampa Pro, that included skating the spots throughout the city, doing a demo, doing a couple autograph signings, bowling, billiards, etc. You can get a lot done in seven days in Miami, even though there was some rain. When it rains, you go bowling or you play billiards. The only Saturday and Sunday we had in Miami were dedicated to a couple autograph signings and a demo.

- Stefan getting emotional
The first autograph signing was in South Miami Beach at MIA Skateshop. Following the signing, the crew headed over to Control Skatepark to do a demo for a ton of kids that showed. There were at least a couple hundred kids inside the park. Matt (owner of the park and all-around ruler) was gracious enough to let us borrow his lights and generator for coming to the park and doing the demo. thanks Matt, we made good use of your stuff!

- Fanatics!
On Sunday, everyone headed up north a bit for another autograph signing. this one at Island Water Sports’ Deerfield Beach location. Another couple hours of signing for all the kids that showed up and we were headed back to Miami for more skating. Both autograph signings went off; the demo was amazing; street skating in Miami was amazing (aside from the occasional rain). An all around good trip to Miami!
Thanks to MIA Skateshop, IWS in Deerfield, Control Skatepark, Ian O’Connor, and everyone else we crossed paths with on the trip!
The etnies RV met us in Miami to drive everyone up to Tampa for the Pro contest. A five-hour ride is nothing in a vehicle like that beast, especially when you have cards and poker chips! It has been a while since the contest, and we're pretty sure you’ve heard all about it, so we’ll spare you with any details at this point.
It, however, must be re-iterated that Bastien got second place (could very well have got first for a repeat, but Busenitz took it), and Stefan got tenth in Street and Best Trick on the bank-to-wall. The twelve-day Florida trip had come to a successful end in Tampa, and everyone was ready to head for home. Thanks to Schaefer, Clements, and the entire S.P.O.T. crew for another kick-ass contest weekend!

- Stache!
Since the trip to Miami, a bunch of other stuff has been going on. Most recently, Arto, Rune, Bastien, Sheckler, Elissa Steamer, and Lauren Perkins went to New York for some photo shoot business, as well as an etnies Fall 2005 Product Launch party, which went down with quite a bang on April 7. Rune, Bastien, and Ryan were there for only a couple days, while Arto stayed a few extra days to skate and shoot photos with Mr. Gabriel “Stache” Friedman, who shoots photos for Slap (look for an upcoming article in Slap that Gabe shot. lots of Stache!). Before leaving, they all did a photo shoot with Alex from LoDown Magazine, which is based in Germany.
Ryan also did an interview and shoot with Complex magazine. Everyone was pretty glad to get home after the New York trip. too much of that place will drive you insane after a while! Good times were had though.

- 10th!
Arto has been back home in Huntington skating all the time. The weather has been good, so he’s been taking advantage of it. Aside from the New York trip with the etnies crew, he just got back on a five-day trip to the Phoenix, AZ area to shoot photos and film.
Rune Glifberg didn’t make the trek to Tampa for the contest ‘cuz he had to move into his new house down in Encinitas, CA. He is pretty much settled in now, and has had a few nice BBQ’s to break her in. He lives a stone's throw from the Encinitas YMCA, so he’s been skating the ramp and bowl down there a bunch.

- 2nd place
Stefan Janoski has been at home in Sacramento taking small trips to San Francisco to skate. He’s working on a couple projects that you will see in the mags very soon. Speaking of Stefan in the mags, check the May issue of Slap, Stefan has an interview in it, and it is amazing to say the least! Nice one Stefan!
Bastien Salabanzi has been chilling in Huntington lately skating around and playing the guitar. May starts a hectic schedule for him with tours, contests, etc., so he’s been relaxing a little before things get crazy. He’s headed to Paris later this month to spend some time with his family before the etnies crew heads out there for our Europe trip in a couple weeks.

- Where's Ryan?
Ryan Sheckler has been busy with school lately. Taking him to New York for a few days set him back, so he has to do some catching up to do. When he hasn’t been at school or doing homework, Ryan's been on a skate mission with a couple projects in the works right now, Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months!
That, for the most part, sums up the last month and a half. Updates should be coming a lot sooner since no trips are planned. Stay tuned. Be sure to check out the new photo galleries from Florida and New York for the photos that we just couldnt fit into the news!
Love for Shecky!

They love him, they really, really do!
etnies' New Ads! Do You Love 'em or Hate 'em? Tell Us!
by: Cropley | Tuesday, April 19, 2005
We at etnies decided to try something a little different and run some ads that celebrate how good we have it as skateboarders, surfers, dirt bikers, snowboarders and BMXers, while poking a little lighthearted fun at people who have chosen a more traditional path in life.
What other company would give you the chance to tell those responsible for the ads in your favorite magazines what you actually think? Not many. Now take a look at etnies' new "I Wish" ads and let us know if you think they suck ass or kick ass.

From the Archives!

After doing a little lurking on the internet, we found some old photos and an old interview with Arto on Thrasher's website.

etnies Invades New York!
by: Brink | Tuesday, April 12, 2005

- Don Brown, Rune Glifberg and Arto Saari

- This is one of the many hot chicks that danced on a pole all night.
We at etnies are just so damn proud of our upcoming Fall line that we decided to go throw a big party in New York City! So last Thursday, April 7, etnies took over a club in Manhattan called Movida and invited lots of our closest friends.
In attendance were Arto Saari, Bastien Salabanzi, Ryan Sheckler, Rune Glifberg, Elissa Steamer and Lauren Perkins. All of them looked to be having quite a good time.

- Hungry Rune!
There was skateboarding footy playing on the big screen, music, dancers, open bar, shenanigans, friends, family, industry, some non “G-rated” occurrences (sorry kiddies gotta keep it clean here), media, paparazzi, retailers, digi cams galore and more. If you were there, you know. If you weren’t—then maybe next time. Sorry to all the folks who got stuck out in the rain! Next time don’t try being so “fashionably late.”

- Rune is well-fed, on the way to the party and happy!

- Packed!
More Stefan! Can You Handle It?
by: Brink | Monday, April 11, 2005

- Big in Japan!
Stefan Janoski has some footy in the new 411 with Reese Forbes. Stefan also has a photo in the newly-formatted 411 magazine that comes with the DVD.
As if that's not enough, Stefan's interview from the May issue of Slap is now online.

- The new 411!
More Winter Skateboarding Kudos!
by: Brink | Friday, April 8, 2005
We like seeing kids who need to skate so badly that they are enduring the elements. This photo was submitted to us for our crazy photo contest. This kid is cool. Keep skating fella'.
BastienSalabanzi.com!
by: Brink | Friday, April 8, 2005

- Even when he was younger, Bastien was killing hubbas.
Be sure to stop by Bastien Salabanzi's new website when you have a spare minute. the site is packed with photos, videos, a schedule, contest results, forums and more. Surely enough to give you you're fill of Bastien.
Attention February Newsletter Contest Winners! Where Are You?
by: Brink | Wednesday, April 6, 2005
We contacted five of you etnies newsletter subscribers last month because you were picked to win free etnies and only one winner wrote back! Thomas (we don't print last names) from Colbert, Washington. Congrats, Thomas! Tom likes to ride motocross, in case anyone wanted to know. And he's cool because he's an etnies newsletter subscriber!
So basically, all this nonsense means that we are picking four more winners this week. Keep your fingers crossed and you might get a call or email from us offering you a free pair of etnies soon! There's also no reason you should't be entering the Crazy Photo Contest to be trying to win free etnies as well.
Ryan Sheckler's New Ad and New Sponsor
by: Brink | Wednesday, April 6, 2005

- AHHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA
Ryan Sheckler's new Almost ad is pretty damn funny. Could skateboarding be getting a sense of humor again? Ryan has also picked up a new sponsor--Amp'd Mobile. Yay for Ryan! Free stuff rules.
And Now...Slap!
by: Brink | Wednesday, April 6, 2005

- Stefan and Liam. Liam and Stefan. Man and his dog. Dog and his man.
Yes, Stefan Janoski wins the "most coverage in a long time" award so far this year by landing an interview in the May issue of Slap. So go pick up a copy and relive "One Week With Stefan Janoski." While you're at it, take notice of the shoes he's wearing in some of the photos. Sneak peek? Perhaps...
And just when you thought it was over, Rune Glifberg's got a spread on the page after Stefan's piece. Go team go!
Crazy Photo Contest Extended! Stop Sucking!
by: Brink | Tuesday, April 5, 2005

- Yea man, do an endo onto some girl's crotch!

- Yea yea, this chick likes BMX! Breasts and Bikes! That's a good name for a website.
People! Listen! There's not much time left. Don't you want free shoes and fame? After the last photo posting on here, it looked like people were finally getting the hang of this and we got some submissions that actually made us giggle. But now y'all are back to the usual slackin' off. You half asses!
There's like 12 of you, out of hundreds, who actually obeyed the rules. Which means that three out of those five will win shoes. What kinda crap is that?
I want to be able to give you free shoes and show your photo skills to the entire world. Don't you realize the power of etnies.com? 400 kids called town hall freaking out last week when I pranked their asses for April Fool's Day. That's at least 400 people that will see your work!
We love laughing 'till we cry, but not laughing at you. We want to laugh with you 'cuz your submission is so damn funny! Where's the comedy? Where's the inspiration and creativity? Where's the desire to win free etnies? Stop sucking and get photivated! So get this: In attempts to be fun and fair and get your brains in gear, we are extending the contest until mid-April. This gives you nearly tow more weeks to impress the hell out of us one last time. Do it, or we'll never extend a contest again.

- Is this a walk home from school on the "average" day? Maybe I am too old or something, but do you kids usually wear your jock straps outside of school?
The final day for submissions is now Sunday, April 17. So when I get back in the office on Monday, I better be cracking up at what I see or else I might just let nobody win. Muahahhahahahahahah!
Here's a few hints:
- The photo needs to have a pair of etnies in it. DUH! At least get an etnies logo in there somehow and show us you're trying.
- Don't steal a photo off of the internet and send it to us. We aren't that stupid.
The pictures of hot chicks are great, keep 'em coming. We're thankful, but just make sure they have etnies on, otherwise we're just gonna forward the photo all over the office and then toss it. - If the etnies in the photo arent visible or can be proven to be etnies, we can't allow you to win.
- No one said you can't use Photoshop. Wink wink.
- Smaller-sized files would load faster and help me get home from the office before midnight.
- Don't copy what you have already seen us post here. If we've posted it, it has already been done. Be original or you suck.

- Um...weird. For the record, etnies never sponsored a Hitler. We prefer non-racists team riders.

- This is just the absolute worst of the Photoshop attempts.

- Woah, easy there tough guy. You can't be that rough if you hang a pink Bam Margera poster in your room anyway.

- Kinda cute, but no etnies shoes. LOSER! Although the pumpkin carving skills are second-to none.

- This is just downright outrageous!

- Dude, this is getting out of hand! You put a snake in your pants? I think you meant to submit to some "other" type of site.

- Yet another hot chick with her body painted. If you can set me up me to be the body painter on her next photo shoot, you'll automatically win the contest.

- Checkout those thugs! Their ghetto gowns are in full effect! Yo yo G-Unit in the hizzy my nizzle fo shizzle!
Upcoming Events!

They have been working on the film for well over a year now and would be stoked to have anyone and everyone come out to the premiere and witness the first skateboarding film to document the skateparks of the 1970's/1980's and the current skatepark explosion that is taking place in Southern California.
The event will take place from 5pm to 10:30pm so be sure to come out and session that park before and after the premiere! Click here for more information on the film and the event. The film will be available for sale here soon after the premiere.
Thanks for all the support from those who contributed to the film and to the skateboarders that have supported SoCalSkateparks.com over the past few years.
These Boys Are Just Ruling the Mags!
by: Brink | Monday, April 4, 2005

- This is one frame of a backlip to shove it sequence. Notice there's no end to the rail. That means, Stefan had to do a shove it out of the backlip in the middle of the rail. That's never easy. especially when you're in China.
The May '05 issue of The Skateboard Mag has a large China tour article featuring Stefan Janoski, Tim O'Connor, Brian Wenning and friends. In this issue you'll also find a photo of Bastien near nutting himself.
April Fools!
by: Brink | Monday, April 4, 2005

- Still here!
Last Friday was April Fools Day, and it was posted here that the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest was closing down and being replaced with a community garden and dog park. And you know what? YOU ALL FELL FOR IT! Some of the skateboard media even did.
Over 400 phone calls were received by town hall in less than four hours time. Obviously, they were a bit annoyed by this and asked us to take the post down. Of course, not wanting to disobey The Man, we did.
One thing is for sure, we know that people are actually reading what we post, and more importantly, thanks for supporting your (and our) skatepark. Good job skaters!

Some Big Name Pros and Their Legal Woes!

Is the world getting too uptight or are skateboarders just talking things too far? You decide. Either way, 11 years in prison for a certain pro can't be good.
