GvR in The Skateboard Mag
by: Brink | Friday, January 28, 2005

Definitely get your hands on the new March issue of The Skateboard Mag to see coverage of the infamous Goofy vs. Regular contest that was held last fall at the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest. In case you hadn’t heard already, Bastien Salabanzi tore the roof off the place with a display of skateboarding prowess unlike anything many of us have ever seen. His 10-minute run in the regular-foot finals was also hailed as number 5 in EXPN’s top 10 moments of 2004. Interestingly enough, most of Bastien’s bangers were performed while rolling fakie or switch, which technically means he was standing right-foot forward—goofy. What does it all mean? Go read Mr. Wilkins’ article in The Mag to find out and hold tight—the etnies Bastien shoe will be unveiled very soon.

Well, the Skatepark of Tampa hosted another Tampa Am contest last weekend, and, as usual, the boys at SPOT put on another great event. Cheers to Brian Schaefer, Ryan Clements, and the entire SPOT posse for kicking arse! There's not much to report about etnies riders at the contest, but keep checking the etnies site…you may see some of the names from the contest here soon!
Arto Saari has been busy fixing up his old house so he can sell it, and moving stuff into his new house. He’s been buying various furniture items to live comfortably, as well. On the skate front, Arto’s been on various daily missions to spots around Southern California, while also sessioning the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest and the Volcom Skatepark in Costa Mesa. Have you seen the two latest color editions of Arto’s shoe? (The Black/Grey/White one is bangin’!).
Bastien Salabanzi has been on a mission shooting photos with Atiba lately for a possible upcoming interview. I guess we’ll all have to wait and find out! Next Tuesday, February 1, Bastien heads out to Melbourne, Australia with his Flip mates to film and shoot photos, as well as enter the World Cup of Skateboarding contest on February 11-13. Also, be sure to peep Bastien's two-page spread sequence on pages 128-129 of the March 2005 issue of TransWorld Skateboarding.
Stefan Janoski just got back from Barcelona, Spain, where he went on a quick 10-day adventure to shoot photos and get some footage. Seems like he is always in Barcelona! Stefan will just be chillin’ in Sacto, skating and what-not for the next while, except for a trip down to SoCal next week to come by etnies and see what’s new.
Ryan Sheckler has been doing his school thang as of late, while also getting in some skating here and there. He, like Bastien, is heading out to Australia for the World Cup contest in February.
Rune Glifberg is also heading out to Australia for the contest. Apparently, they are building a giant roll-in tower that connects to a massive quarter pipe similar to the Mega Ramp jump and quarter pipe. This contraption is connected to the street course and will be a part of the street contest, as well, so some serious stuff is going to go down. Good luck, Rune! Go buy a pair his etnies model, the Tip, in stores now.

Last week, Arto Saari, Rune Glifberg, Stefan Janoski, Ryan Sheckler and Elissa Steamer all headed out to the Zumiez Sales Party out in Copper Mountain, Colorado. (See last week's Team Report for more details.) They each went up on stage to present trophies to Zumiez salespersons who had reached a
certain amount of sales for the year. Rune, Stefan, and Elissa all presented the 21st-30th place salespeople, Ryan presented 8th place, and Arto presented 6th. Everyone had a great time hanging out and gambling (Especially Ryan. Check the photo, he had tons of chips!), etc. A huge thanks goes out to everyone at Zumiez for inviting us out!
The Action Sports Retailer trade show went down over the weekend in San Diego, California, and some of our riders attended for various reasons. Arto, Bastien and Rune came down to sign autographs at the Flip booth and kick it for a bit at the etnies booth. Arto also signed a few autographs at the Quiksilver booth. Sheckler came down on Sunday to pay a visit to his various sponsors' booths. Now that another trade show is over, it's back to work!
As mentioned last week, Rune Glifberg got the cover of the latest issue of Thrasher (February 2005). Here it is for your viewing pleasure. Rune's back home now in Costa Mesa, California, skating and getting ready to head out to Australia. But that's not for a few weeks, you'll hear more about it later.

Bastien Salabanzi just got back from Europe last week, and as previously mentioned, he headed down to the ASR trade show over the weekend. Now Bastien is back home in Huntington Beach, skating everyday and getting ready for a long trip out to Australia in February. We mentioned last that he won the street contest in Estonia a few weeks back. Well, check the photo above for the evidence.
Arto Saari is back home in Huntington Beach, getting ready to move into his new place --hopefully this weekend! On Monday night, Arto came down to the etnies Skatepark of Lake Forest and had a nice little session. He's actually planning to frequent the park quite a bit, so come on out and maybe you'll get a chance to skate with him!
The day after returning from the Zumiez event last week, Stefan Janoski headed out to Barcelona on a 10-day photo and video mission with the Habitat homies. He'll be back late next week, when we'll get an update on how things went. We're pretty sure things will be just fine, and more footage and photos of Stefan will be turning up before too long.
Ryan Sheckler is back at school after the long weekend. (The lucky kid got the day off yesterday for Martin Luther King Day). Yesterday was his Dad's birthday, so they went and played a little golf. I wonder if Ryan beat his dad on his birthday? Either way, Happy Birthday, Randy!
Another end to another team report. Keep getting your shred on, and make sure to check back next week to see what's up with the etnies team. In the meantime, don't forget to go buy a pair of the Arto and the Tip shoes!
Skate Team Report 01-12-05

Merry New Year! Hope your holidays, New Year's celebration, and time away from school was filled with good times, and lots of skating, of course! Holidays are always a good time to skate those spots you usually can't get to.
Congratulations to Rune Glifberg, who got the cover of the newest issue of Thrasher (February 2005). Get out to your local skate shop and pick up a copy! Nice one, Rune. Thanks for kicking ass! For New Year's, Rune headed down to a golf resort called Aviara in Carlsbad, California with the family for a few days to get away and have a nice quiet New Year's celebration--and play a round of golf, of course! Since then, Rune has been praying for the weather to get better so he can skate the outdoor vert ramps and pools down in the San Diego area. He has also been skating at the Volcom facility lately, though, and when he isn't skating, he’s spending time down in the San Diego area still looking for houses. Rune just headed out to Copper Mountain, Colorado to attend a party that Zumiez (a large skate/snow/surf chain store) is holding. Once a year, Zumiez invites companies and their team riders out to a specified snow resort to celebrate employees of theirs that have reached certain sales goals. Rune won't be there in time to do any snowboarding, but you'll more than likely find him at the etnies-sponsored blackjack table. Go buy a pair of etnies Tip shoes, designed by Rune, available in stores right now.
Arto Saari also headed down to Carlsbad for a New Year's celebration and some golf at Aviara. Arto's mom and sister were in town, so he took them down there to ring in the New Year with the Glifberg family. Like Rune, Arto has been skating the Volcom facility lately, which is basically the only indoor place to skate during all this rain. It has rained 10 out of the last 14 days in Southern California, which obviously sucks for skating! Like Rune, Arto headed out to Colorado to attend the Zumiez party. Arto likes fleecing people, though, so look out, Colorado! He has also been in the market for furniture lately, as he is moving into a new place. Arto has been staying at Geoff Rowley's house for the past six months or so, and is finally moving out into his own place. Arto has no furniture whatsoever, so we'll keep you updated on his purchases. Go buy a pair of etnies Arto shoes, available in stores right now.
Bastien Salabanzi is still in Europe, but returns to the States soon. The weather hasn’t been that good in Europe, either, but probably better than SoCal lately. He's been out there for about a month now, visiting with family, skating, etc. On January 8-9, Bastien attended the Pop Session Winter Blast in Tallinn, Estonia and, in typical Bastien flair, won the contest (of course)! Congratulations once again to Bastien for killing it every time!
Ryan Sheckler celebrated his 15th birthday over the holidays. That means he's almost ready to drive. I wonder what kind of car he'll get next year? Happy belated birthday, Ryan! etnies didn't forget about Ryan, though, as over the holidays he invited 18 of his friends to go to Magic Mountain in a limousine. It sure was cold that day, but nobody else was there, so every ride was empty! Ryan, like Rune and Arto, also headed out to Colorado for the Zumiez deal. Will he be allowed to gamble at a private party? I'll bet he hopes so! After Colorado, it's back to school for a couple days before heading down to San Diego this weekend for the Action Sports Retailer trade show.
Like the rest of the team, Stefan Janoski also flew out to Colorado for the Zumiez party. He's not much of a gambler, but he may get involved in some fleecing. Lately, Stefan's been enjoying some down time at home before things heat up this year, starting with the trip to Colorado. He gets back on Wednesday, January 12 and then heads straight to Barcelona the next day with the Habitat crew. Lucky duck, the weather is probably amazing in Barcelona right now!
That's it for now. More updates and photos coming next week after ASR. Stay tuned!
