etnies European Open
June 11-13, 2004
Munich, Germany

For the seventh time, the etnies European Open took place in Olympic Parks ice skating area in Munich. IOU provided an excellent street course complete with a wooden car, which was supposed to be a Lamborghini, but looked more like a Hummer. At least you could backside 180 the thing like Chris Pfanner did and win one of the Best Trick awards. The others were a backside nose blunt slide on the hubba by Petr Horvart and a backside nose blunt slide on the rail by Charles Collet.

Pre-Qualification was scheduled for Friday, and more than 120 youngsters tried their luck. Saturday was Qualification day, and many well-known European skateboarders showed up--even Tony Silva from the U.S. and Avi Luzia from Israel dropped in. From the ninety competitors, two went straight to the Finals: Akim Cherif from France and Fredrik Austbo from Norway were the lucky ones this time.

After a long day of too many nice forty-five second runs, SchҼtzi held an amazing party at the Praterinsel, where everybody danced until the morning light. Scandalous pictures will soon be available on Louisa Menkes site, partygirlproductions.tk

The sun rose too early for the Semi-Finals on Sunday. Thirty skateboarders made the cut from the Qualification. Philip Schuster had an amazing run with switch 360 flips, backside lipslides and tailslides on the hubba. Killian Heuberger did switch frontside heelflips and Conhuir Lynn was a pleasure to watch with his nice, big 360 flips.

The boys had a break and it was time for the GirlҒs Jam. Twelve girls competed with an introduction run of forty-five seconds and a five-minute jam. Steffi Weiss did frontside boardslides on the rail, Rodi Munzel raged all over the course and Juliana Marinko was the most technical one, but 1st place went to Sabrina Goggel, who ollied down all the stairs.

Munich local Tobias Albert flew high in the Finals and landed in 3rd place. Current German champion Fabian Neugebauer placed 2nd with nice 360 flips, and 1st place again went to sixteen year-old Fredrik Austbo from Norway.
