etnies European Open 2004 Linköping Munich Rome

by: Mike Matz | Wednesday, March 24, 2004

etnies
is proud to present the Seventh annual etnies European Open, a pure skateboarding event. This time, a couple new locations were chosen: The first stop will be in Linkping, Sweden, an outdoor concrete skatepark. The second stop is Munich, which has established itself as THE European street event in skateboarding. The last stop will be beautiful Rome at the seaside resort of Lido di Ostia, including an outdoor skatepark equipped with obstacles built by IOU Ramps just two minutes away from the beach.

Over the last seven years, the etnies European Open has expanded to become one of the greatest skateboarding events in Europe. To prove this point, more than 200 skateboarders competed in the street discipline in Munich alone last year. The etnies European Open events are also the qualifiers for the World Cup Skateboarding events in Europe. Please check www.wcsk8.com
for additional information and dates.

The etnies European Open contests are held as open events, so everybody has the chance to compete. More than 200 skateboarders from all over Europe are expected, with 10,000 Euro prize money awarded at each stop. The Top 100 riders according to last years scoring are directly qualified for the qualification on Saturday. All the others have to skate the pre-elimination on Friday. Please check www.skateboardeurope.com
for online sign-up and qualification list.

May 21-23
etnies European Open Link撶ping, Sweden (Street Only)
Linkping is the first stop of the series. The concrete skatepark is based just minutes away from etnies team rider Chris Astroms hometown.

June 11-13
etnies European Open Munich, Germany (Street, Girl撒s Jam)
Olympiagelnde, Eistrainingshalle
The series continues in Munich at the Olympic Area for four days. Munich is an essential part of the etnies European Open and is also one of the greatest street skating events in Europe, with more than 200 competitors. IOU Ramps is providing a new street course. An overview will soon be available at www.etnies-germany.com
.

This street course will also be used in Basel at the European Skateboard Championships in August 2004. Thursday is open practice and Friday is pre-elimination. As in Linkping, the top 100 skateboarders are already qualified for the qualifications on Saturday. All the others need to skate the pre-elimination on Friday. Finals and prize-giving are on Sunday.

Hotel information for Munich can be found at: www.muenchen-hotel.de
or www.muenchen-tourist.de
. Entrance fee per discipline is 30 Euro. Prize money: 10 000 䶀

September 10-12
etnies European Open Rome, Italy (Street Only)
Last but not least, all roads lead to Rome. Thats why EuropeҒs best outdoor park is based in Lido de Ostia, the beach resort of Rome. This skatepark is located just minutes away from the beach and was built in 2003 by IOU ramps.

IOU Ramps
will provide additional obstacles for the etnies European Open 2004. Especially for the event, a big funbox will be built with different heights, curbs, ledges and rails, plus a big roll-in will also be added to the street course, as well.

The etnies European Open in Rome is the final event of the year, where Europe's 2004 Street Skateboarder of the Year will be announced.

The etnies European Open is presented by Monster Skateboard magazine and www.skateboardeurope.com
. We would also like to thank the sponsors who make all this possible: etnies, Carhartt, Eastpak, Nixon.

etnies Skate Team Report 03-24-04

by: Mike Matz | Wednesday, March 24, 2004

Im sure you already know this, but yes, Bastien Salabanzi
did destroy the Tampa Pro contest a week-and-a-half ago on his way to 1st place. When you take a bunch of tricks from his massive bag, combine them in a weekend full of flawless runs, you have nothing but trouble for the rest of the competition.

Thanks to the Skatepark of Tampa for a fun-filled, well-run contest weekend. After Tampa, Bastien took off, along with fellow etnies pro Arto Saari
on a weeklong Quiksilver tour of the East Coast of these United States. Shop appearances and signings were on the menu, as well as some street skating, as they ventured from Tampa, Florida to Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and finally, Washington DC. Bastien and Arto are back in Southern California now. Bastien has some last-minute business to tend to for his Skateboarder magazine interview (keep your eyes peeled for that one!), and Arto will be skating and working on getting his knee back to 100%, before summer madness begins in a month or so.

ArtoҒs first pro model shoe
with etnies
should be in shops as you read this. It is a limited release until June, so scour your local shops until you get a pair on your feet. You can check photos of the shoe here
on the etnies website, as well as a brief explanation on why Arto wanted the two trees and the 26 on his shoe.

Stefan Janoski
is back home in Sacramento after being in Miami for close to five weeks. He skated in the Tampa Pro contest two weekends back and made the semi-finals, but was unable to put it together to make the finals. Quite all right, though, as everyone in attendance got a chance to view his smooth style via switch flips and lazy tre-flips, to name a few. Stefan is now on a mission to finish up his TransWorld video part, which will be out in a few months.

Rune Glifberg
has been taking some random trips here and there with the Volcom crew to finish-up their upcoming video. A journey down to Mexico and some other random filming trips will add up to some nice new stuff for your viewing pleasure really soon. Also be sure to check
the first issue of The Skateboard Mag
(collectors item) for a beautiful photo of Rune in textbook back Smith position. Damn, those shoes stand out!

Ryan Sheckler
has also been on the Volcom filming mission (and filming for an Almost Skateboards video, as well). He decided to skip the Tampa contest to head down on one of the Volcom Mex missions to get some work done for the vid. Ryan also just had a short interview in the April issue of Thrasher. Make sure to get your grubby hands on this one҅the backside flip is out of control, ridiculous! Ryan has also been working on his self-portrait photography, as you can see in the photo. Actually, being bored in a car with a digi-cam adds up to self-portrait photography.

Contest Report: Tampa Pro 2004

by: Mike Matz | Monday, March 22, 2004

Skatepark of Tampa
Tampa, Florida
March 12-14, 2004

Three solid days of fun in the sun, er, sweatbox warehouse, celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the realest, rawest skatepark contest of them all: Tampa Pro (the only one to include "Nightlife" on their official printed contest schedule)!

Friday, March 12
Team Manager / Industry VIP Contest

The second annual Team Manager / Industry VIP contest went down on the street course at 10:00 a.m. What? 10:00 a.m.? Who do they expect to show-up at that hour? At least seventeen dudes did, believe it or not. The top place was claimed by SpoT's own General Manager Ryan Clements, who matched that achievement with the Blackest Socks and Greyest Hair awards. Way to go, old-timer!

After that, Cliché
's Bon Appetit! video had a "premiere" in the bowl warehouse to a small but sprightly crowd, who were also treated to their own private little product toss--how cute.

Saturday, March 13
Saturday Street Qualifiers
When you were little, you could usually be found eating a bowl of cereal and watching cartoons on Saturday morning. Now that youre all grown-up, you're way more into checking out the Street Qualifiers at Tampa Pro. Two fifty-second runs, best counts, top qualifier goes straight to Finals, 2nd-16th go to Semi-Finals. Chris Cole blew many minds with his uncanny board control abilities, landing him in the top qualifying position, with etnies' own Bastien Salabanzi right behind in 2nd.

Nate Jones 42. Elissa Steamer (etnies)

Moat Race

Another hot Tampa Pro tradition is the Moat Race through the murky, canal o' sludge that sits stewing in front of the park. A bunch of kids basically climb all over each other, splishing and splashing in the yucky concoction (through two tunnels, even!) for a chance at winning a big stack of decks, shirts and other equipment. It's definitely an eyeful for the spectators, and a pantful (of sludge) for the entrants. A good time was had by all (except the losers).

Vert Finals

Later in the afternoon, the Vert contest went down under a rapidly setting sun. Fifteen of today's top crop of perpendicular pundits fired off radical routines of tech manual wizardry atop the big-ass trannies of SpoT's big kahuna. It was a tough call, but in the end, tech won out over hot air, with Montreal's Pierre Luc Gagnon peppering his solid, consistent runs with some very difficult tricks, like backside nollie heelflip Indys and tail grab 540s, to claim 1st place spoils.

Vert Final Results
1. Pierre Luc Gagnon 2. Anthony Furlong 3. Neal Hendrix 4. Sandro Dias 5. Jake Brown 6. Lincoln Ueda (etnies) 7. Paul Zitzer 8. Danny Mayer 9. Mike Crum 10. Phil Hajal 11. Brian
Howard 12. Darren Navarette 13. Jesse Fritsch 14. Rodney Meade 15. Ty Cabaya

Vert Best Trick
The Vert Best Trick contest stretched out for a half hour into dusk as a handful of vert dawgs threw down their best bodacious banger attempts for the halfpipe-lovin' crowd. Some crazy action went down as some of the best ramp riders in the world flicked, flipped and flapped their way high into the air and down upon the singing metal coping of SpoT's big ol' U thingy. Check the list below for the lowdown.

Vert Best Trick Final Results
1. Danny Mayer--Kickflip 540 ($1000) 2. Paul Zitzer--Frontside heelflip (no grab) ($800) 3. Pierre Luc Gagnon--Nollie heelflip Indy 360 ($600) 4. Sandro Diaz--Double kick judo 540 ($400) 5. Anthony Furlong--Nose grind pop-out off the extension ($200)

Vert Best Trick No Cigars
Jake Brown attempted a frontside 720 about a thousand times and came really close, but no cigar. etnies' own Lincoln Ueda enhanced his mega air show with some valiant attempts at an alley-oop kickflip grab back-and-forth-hand-flippy kind of thing
(about eight feet out and traveling twelve feet, of course).

Saturday Nightlife
As the annual St. Patrick's day parade raged Mardi-Gras style just outside (complete with loud, gaudy floats filled with all sorts of themed characters throwing out beads to drunken revelers), Foundation's That's Life video premiered with three free kegs at the Masquerade club in the Ybor City district of Tampa. Mike V & The Rats and Operatic (Jesse Fritsch's band) then took to the stage and played to a sparse but appreciative crowd. Later that night, it was rumored that a certain individual caused some major mayhem back at his hotel, earning himself a free night in the slammer.

Sunday, March 14
Street Semi-Finals

The Street Semi-Finals got underway at noon, right after everyone arrived from church (lol). Two sixty-second runs, best counts, top ten go to Finals. All previous Tampa Pro winners are
automatically entered in the Semi-Finals.

Street Semi-Finals Results
1. Bastien Salabanzi (etnies) 2. Rick McCrank 3. Danny Morrin 4. Daniel Viera 5. Kerry Getz 6. Peter Ramondetta 7. Kyle Berard 8. Caine Gayle 9. Jeremy Wray 10. Dennis Busenitz 11. Tony Trujillo 12. Patrick Melcher 13. Pat Channita 14. Greg Lutzka 15. Austin Seaholm 16. Zered Bassett (etnies) 17. Rodney Jones 18. Chris Dobstaff 19. Stefan Janoski (etnies) 20. Ronnie Creager 21. Willy Santos 22. Frank Hirata 23. Daisuke Mochizuki 24. Gershon Mosley 25. Reese Forbes 26. Chris Senn 27. Billy Rohan 28. Wolnei Dos Santos 29. Ryan Gee 30. Eric Koston 31. Mike Vallely (etnies) 32. Chad Bartie 33. Justin Strubing 34. Corey Duffel 35. Emeric Pratt 36. Ed Selego

Street Finals

The Street Finals at the 10th Annual Tampa Pro brought down the house as twelve top contenders threw down some mighty tough tricks, each vying for the $10,000 smackeroos up on the table. Chris Cole employed the "do whatever you want҅and just make it" technique to crowd-pleasing result, throwing all kinds of super-difficult tricks
all over the Tampa street course as if it were child's play. Rick McCrank was his usual consistent self, effectively mixing old and new, simple and tech in several of his inspired final runs.

None of these guys could hold a candle to etnies' own Bastien Salabanzi, whose technical wizardry, combined with his smooth and effortless style, was nothing less than incredible, leaving judges and spectators alike in awe. Kickflip frontside boardslides to fakie down the fun box rail, backside flips and Cab flips over the huge pyramid, 360 flips up the gap, as well as switch heelflips down it, were just a few of the difficult moves Bastien pulled consistently throughout his runs. The crowd and judges roared in approval as Bastien easily stomped his way into the top spot.

Street Final Results

1. Bastien Salabanzi (etnies) 2. Rick McCrank 3. Kyle Berard 4. Chris Cole 5. Kerry Getz 6. Danny Morrin 7. Caine Gayle 8. Daniel Viera 9. Peter Ramondetta 10. Dennis Busenitz 11. Billy Marks 12. Jeremy Wray

Street Best Trick
Right after the Street Finals came Street Best Trick, in which a bunch of dudes hammered away at the step-up rail and big rail for exactly thirty minutes, trying to show everyone what they know. While last year's Best Trick at Tampa Pro was rather lackluster, this year's turned
out spectacular as Chris Cole, Greg Lutzka, Rodney Jones, Malcom Watson, Billy Marks and others threw some crazy-ass stunts up and down 'dem rails. Just scope the trick list below.

Street Best Trick Final Results
1. Chris Cole--Kickflip backside nose blunt slide, 270 lipslide, big inward heelflip to flat, backside tailslide big spin out ($1,000) 2. Greg Lutzka--Kickflip frontside nosegrind, kickflip frontside noseslide, 270 switch front boardslide ($800) 3. Billy Marks--360 flip
lipslide to fakie, many more ($600) 4. Rodney Jones--Switch flip boardslide on the step-up rail ($400) 5. Malcom Watson--360 flip nose slide down the step-up rail ($200)

Sunday Nightlife
As SpoT said to anyone who still wanted to party at the end of the weekend: "Give your liver a high-five". Quite a little crew of committed revelers did just that at the official Tampa Pro afterparty at the Green Room in Ybor City for one last, albeit low-key, night of drunken fun. Once again, we here at etnies would like to thank the Skatepark of Tampa for having us back to the funnest contest of the circuit. We'd also like to wish SpoT another ten years of great skateboarding contests, as well as congratulate Bastien Salabanzi for an incredible contest win!

Arto 26?

by: Mike Matz | Monday, March 22, 2004

If youre one of the lucky few that have had the chance to get a sneak peak at ArtoҒs new etnies pro model shoe
currently hitting stores in limited quantities, you may have noticed a number 26 on the back of the heel and two pine trees on the insole, lace plate and woven label. What's up with
that? Arto didn't just slap the 26 and the trees on there at random. It's local Finnish skateboarding lore connected to just two words: Kaks Kuus! Kaks Kuus?

Well, unless you're Finnish, that probably doesnt explain much. Kaks means "two" and kuus means "six" or "trees". Without giving too much of the lore away, all we can say is that there are a lot of trees in Finland, and that there is a certain popular skate hang-out related to that number. If you want to figure it all out, maybe you'll just have to take a trip out there.

Bastien Salabanzi Wins Tampa Pro!

by: Mike Matz | Tuesday, March 16, 2004

etnies' own Bastien Salabanzi took the 10th annual Tampa Pro street contest by storm, grabbing top honors at the time-honored skateboarding event at the Skatepark of Tampa!

Bastien's technical wizardry, combined with his smooth and effortless style, was the perfect way to celebrate the 10th anniversary of one of skateboarding's most beloved contests. To say he was skating well over the weekend would be a big understatement. Actually, his performance was nothing less than incredible, leaving judges and spectators alike in awe.

Kickflip frontside boardslides to fakie down the fun box rail, backside 180 flips and Cab flips over the huge pyramid, 360 flips up the gap, as well as switch heelflips down it, were just a few of the difficult moves Bastien pulled consistently throughout his runs. The crowd and judges roared in approval as Bastien easily stomped his way into the top spot.

etnies would like to wish the Skatepark of Tampa another ten years of great skateboarding contests, as well as congratulate Bastien on an incredible contest win!

Bastien Salabanzi is supported by etnies Footwear, Flip Skateboards, Quiksilver apparel, Lordz wheels, and Fury trucks

Team Report 03-01-04

by: Mike Matz | Monday, March 1, 2004

Arto Saari
returned to Huntington Beach last week after a three-week trek out to Australia. While in the beautiful world of down under, Arto shot some photos, did some filming and spent Valentines Day weekend at the World Cup contest in Melbourne.

Bastien Salabanzi
was also out in Oz with Arto doing the same business҅photos, filming, contest (Bastien placed 20th). He just finished-up his interview with Skateboarder magazine, which will be out soon. No need to tell you what to expect, cuz you already know! Bastien is now back in Huntington Beach nursing a slight ankle sprain back to health. As mentioned, it is a slight sprain, so heђll be back on more missions in no time.

Ryan Sheckler
was in Australia during February, where he got a very nice 4th place at the contest, and then went on a filming mission with Almost Skateboards for two weeks. Ryan is working on two video parts at the momentone for Almost, and one for Volcom. That will make three video parts in a row, counting the Digital video part he just had. Now that's a mission!

Arto, Bastien, Ryan, Rune Glifberg
and Stefan Janoski
will all be heading out to Tampa, Florida next week for the Skatepark of Tampa Pro contest, March 11-14. After the contest, Arto, Bastien, and Stefan will head out on a Quiksilver tour of the Southeastern U.S. Rune and Ryan will head back to not-so-sunny Southern California.

Other random stuffׅ

Rune

has spent the last few weeks working on his part for the Volcom video, except for this past weekend, when he flew out to the Canary Islands for a Mountain Dew photo / video shoot. Shall we keep our eyes peeled for a commercial featuring Mr. Glifberg in the future? Make sure to watch the Los Angeles Clippers lose to the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night. Rune will be in attendance for the slaughter (sorry, Clips fans) and you just might get a glimpse of him on TV.

Stefan
, aka Mr. Miami, has been in Miami for about five weeks now. Hes down there working on his part for the next TransWorld video. HeҒs close to being done, which will mean you get to feast your eyes on some new Janoski footage before too long. Stefan will be back home in Sacramento after the Quiksilver tour in the Southeast.

Artos
first pro model shoe with etnies drops this month in the U.S.! You can get some sneak peeks on this here website, or in the latest issues of the mags. Also be sure to check out ArtoҒs latest Flip deck graphic, the artwork is from the Really Sorry DVD. There's also an etnies logo on his shirt, go buy one!
